What a week.

I dont even know where to start this time, so much has happend over the last week!

Ok then...The group we were going to raise money for whilst doing out ride to Santiago is run by the local county council. We had dropped off 2 computers, sofas, table & chairs and collected a load of paint. The site was up and running when we were informed by one of the bigwigs from the council that we had to STOP! Turn off the website and dont give anything else to the drop in group. The reason? As they are run by the County Council we cannot activly raise any funds or goods for them. They can run it through a communications commity to see if something can be arranged but its doubtful!!!
What!!! Have you ever heard of such self indorced popus crap in your entire life? We had asked for nothing from them and only wanted to make the users who attend the group a better enviroment. These guys and girls have various levels of learning difficulties (inc my sister) and we were only helping make there day to day lives in the group a bit more comfortable. So the motto seems to be, as far as the local council are concerned, dont bother trying to help out because we wont allow it!!!

Ok then thats my rant over! Onto the rest of the week...

Works looking up with a regular customer upping my hours, shes funny as hell as we spend more time going between her house annd her allotment each visit than anything else as she cannot decide what to do where LOL

I also got a new contract for a hotel so thats superb as its a bit more regular income starting from March.

I spent a happy few hours in our local A&E last night and felt like such a pratt! I couldnt get out or tell if I had a contact lense in my right eye. By the time I got there I looked like something out of a horror film with a blood red eye! I looked like I had some horrible diesease and a coupl of little kids just kept staring at me in horror :) Well after speaking to a Nurse then waiting on the eye Doctor I was happily informed the only thingI was trying to get out of my eye was my eye!!!!!!! :0 I apologised to the doc for wasting their time when I was told that they were going to numb my eye for further investigation....Why???????????

"Well if you didnt take it out or remeber it coming out it may be stuck under one of the eye lids"...So they then proceeded to poke and prod around for a few minutes (not a nice experience) to then declare me contact free! Thats the end of me answering to my vanity so im back to my good old reliable specs because even though they are a pain in the arse where works concerned Id rather put up with that then wondering whether Ive still got a contact in!

On a lighter note my wife and I were watching the news the other morning when an article came on about how Tigers in the wild have moved on from eating cattle to eating humans. The news piece was very detailed including a women who was describing in depth what a nusance this was for the locals who were just trying to live their lives. It was then determined that people were encrouching on the native habitat of these Tigers and wondering why they were being eaten LOL Now Im all for live and let live but this must have been a slow news day. Obviously us humans cant move that quickly so we are going to get eaten! They wanted to train dogs to bark loudly when a Tiger came close to a village but my wife piped up "wouldnt it be easier to put up a fence" LOL Now I know thats a simplistic solution but you would think these do gooders would look for the easiest way to deal with these problems....and try to remember that this wasnt a problem before they strted knicking the tigers territory!!

Went to the allotment today to discover most f the greenhouse glass blown out so its going to be a busy day on the plot tommorrow.

The weather...been a funny week with all seasons in a few days. Its been freezing and then raining, a bit of sun and overcast oh and I shouldnt forget the fog!

They are saying its going to snow so I will try to get some pics.

Busy Busy Busy

Well its been a hectic couple of days with a hectic week lined up...its so nice to be doing something again after being ill so I am not complaining!

The sponsorship for the drop-in centre is already going well just 5 days in. We have so far got them a new table & chairs and new sofas! I got someone to fix an old pc I had at home for free so that will be delivered on Monday to them. We have paint waiting to be collected so next week I will be rolling my sleeves up and getting on with freshening the centre up!!! It really gives you faith back in humanity when so much cn be achieved in such a short space of time by only word of mouth.

The website for the Camino cycle is coming along nicely and is up and running but is incomplete. Have a look and let me know what you think of it so far... www.cycletosantiago.co.uk Im hoping to have it finished by late Sunday evening.

I am hurriedly writing this blog before I have to take the kids to my 4 year old nephews birthday party at a place charmingly named Cheeky Monkeys. Sounds like something off a Pink Panther film and I can just imagine Peter Sellers saying it :) Its one of these take them in and let them go places with ball pools etc so a bit of a dumping ground really where the kids wear themselves out whilst the parents sit back and enjoy a coffee. The good thing is my brother is bringing his Landcrab over for me to have a butchers at, you've got to love classic cars, and no doubt talk him through whatever new problems it is presenting :)

We are then off to help build a gate for a friend and have dinner there so it should be a busy but good day today.

The thing that made me smile yesterday was when I put my youngest to bed and she told me I was the "best Dad in world" :) Why she said it I do not know...perhaps she hasnt figured out im a miserable bugger most of the time yet!!

Seed spuds are chitting nicely and it looks the sun is trying to break through the clouds...a bit of sunshine always makes a day better.

LOL Ive just watched the dog run head long into the garden gate after a cat...stupid animal!! So i best go and see if shes done any damage.

Been Busy :)

Well what a few days! Ive been rushed off of my feet in one form or another and have no commited myself to a few things and I couldn't be happier!

Right then where to start?

As ive mentioned before wifey had decided that we are going to cycle El Camino Ingles in northern Spain. 124km of Spanish countryside and I have to admit I am now looking forward to it. Its going to be a great way to explore the area in more depth and there will be no rush to do this in. The dates we have set for this run are 19th-24th August.

We have chosen who we will raise funds for on this our first epic journey, god Im sooo unfit this really is becoming a reality and I have to get into some sort of training, and that group is called Grapevine. This is a drop in centre for adults with learning disabilities that my sister uses on a daily basis. The group is evolving into more than just a drop in centre, its now actively helping gain employment and volunteer work for these adults within society and also raising awareness/encouraging intergration. They are self funded and I have to admit that the place really needs alot of renovating and goods supplying to make the enviroment a nicer place (not that its a bad place it just really needs updating).

Now as I work for myself I am in a position to be able to offer time. I will be decorating the building and getting lots of replacement furniture off of freecycle for them, in fact I managed to get them a new set of table and chairs that was desperatly needed the same day which was fantastic!! I will also be doing a day a week volunteer work with them which I am really looking forward to as many have worked in gardening and we are going to use my allotment to encourage further education. They will have there own area to grow veg of their choice which we will then cook at harvest time!

There are many other items that are needed inc a new kitchen/white goods, computers and carpets so we will be hitting companies to see if they can supply some of these things for them. I am putting together a website about the cycle run and these wonderful peebs will have info on there of what they do and why. The link will follow in a few days!

Onto other things now... Ive started some regular gardening for a new customer today and what a card she is!! You have got to love the older generation, they have seen so many changes over the years and the stories are just downright hilarious! I am employed for 6 hrs a week by her and we spent the first three drinking coffee!!! I did keep pointing out we were on the clock and should we do some work? but she just laughed and said I am enjoying the company dont worry! I then told her I cant take money off of you for drinking coffee but she was adamant she had planned this so we could get to know each other better.....so in other words I was being checked out in a big way on just about all counts of my life and lifestyle LOL
I must of been ok as its now a weekly arrangement!

The kids are actually in a good mood at the moment. This does make a nice change as the older girls 11,12 are convinced they are in their late teens and the 8 year old seems to be mimicking their moods at the moment! The past few evenings have been a joy with coherent conversations and kisses goodnight instead of sculking off to their bedrooms and festering :)

I must get my seed potatoes out to chit or I will be late planting out. Nothing else to be done at the moment seed wise as its still too early and cold.

The weather....rubbish :) Rain High winds and then frosts, dont you just love a british winter.

Right then lots to do so Im off...

Sunday 18 January 2009

Wifey has decided on our first holiday.

Before wifey shot off to work I have been told to look into riding the Santiago de Compostela pilgramage route! Now I am not an overly religious person but I do love Santiago. Its a fantastic city with a mix of superb history in the old city and a new vibrant modern city surrounding it. The culture is fantastic as are the Spanish people there.

Appently alot of folk walk many many miles as the old pilgrams did but im buggered if im doing that!!! I am far tooo lazy for that!! So we are going to do 200 kms on, get this!!!>.. push bikes!!

When she said ride I thought I was going to get the motorbike out and have a superb blat out but no. We are to use pedal power and I cant remember the last time I pedalled more than a mile or so!!!!!!!! Still marriage is about compromise so I will of course do as I am told :)

No seriously I think it will be good. We will raise some money for charity and see some fantastic parts of Spain as we go along. We have agreed that we will stay in proper hotels along the way so its more of an adventure holiday than anything else. I suppose I had better get fitter and get my poor backside used to a saddle again!! Sounds like lots of talcom powder will be needed!!

I will insist on us having a proper break as well but that will be a family one with the kids in tow. I think camping will be yet again on the cards.

Right best be doing a bit more research on these routes then :)

Been ill :(

This is to date the longest I have gone without boring you all tears. I have had a horrible little bug thats been doing the rounds in my area and my god it knocks you off your feet.

Now as a rule I dont get ill, yea I get the odd cold as do we all but I mean I NEVER get any of those horrible winter viruses that wipe everyone else off of their feet and I have always been quite smug of the fact :) Well all those winters of being well and a smug git have caught up and bit me on backside big time! For over a week I have been stuck in the house, that is enough of a torture in its own right as I can't stand being indoors let alone doing nothing in fact how do the dropouts of society do it? how do they spend years of life watching such delights as Jeremy Kyle on the TV?, this self imposed imprisonment is nothing sort of mental torture.

So with a hefty daily dose of flu tablets and paracetamol, forced upon me by wifey, I have tried to pass the days. At the start, apart from feeling like crap, the relaxation is quite pleasent with no pressing need to get anywhere or do anything and I happily played upon the internet. After a few hours this had lost its appeal so I got the new toy out and played on the xbox for few hours. Ok then, still on day one, I pop on the tv to see what I have been missing. Not alot apparently as daytime tv must be the dregs of the barrell from the broadcastors store rooms and obviously no royalties to pay out otherwise the nonsense would not be on in the first place. Still time passes and I find one program I want to watch even though its a rerun (Long Way Down) so out of 3 hours viewing I have actually watched one program, the rest of the time has been just sort of looking at it. Again I will say how do folk do it? Just stare at a box in the corner of the room for hour upon hour? I find if you think back on whats been on you cant even remember as its complete crap!

So at the end of the first day I had a deep worried feeling that on top of feeling like death warmed up I am going to be driving myself nuts being housebound!

I wasn't wrong!

A week later and I am itching to get on with something...anything....even those jobs wifey has been pestering me to do for months look attractive :) Today I feel like I atually have some energy and have made a traditional Sunday roast...ate it....kept it down....and feel more like a human than I have in what feels like forever. Ive got a job on in the morning so I have hired in a extra hand for the day to help out (OK I mean they will be doing it and I will be supervising) it will be nice to get out.

On the work front I am seriously having a think about what to do for the near future. Work is beyound quiet at the moment so a rethink is going to be in order. Ive just realised that no-one knows what "my work" is LOL. I am a Landscape Garderner and a Handyman more so this time of year. But I also have my HGV licences and Taxi Licences as a back up. The problem is trucking and the cabs are very quiet as well so what to do eh? Plod on and make the best of it all I suppose. So in short I am either flat out or f*%k all and have to make hay while the sun shines for times, such as these, when it doesnt. I would prefer a more constant income but I love being self employed so will just have to look into things and push for work a bit more.

Weather wise its still bloody cold and wet. High winds last night and bins scattered across the garden this morning. Still at least the greenhouse is still intact which is a good thing! If you are wondering why the obsession with the weather its not just because im a Brit its because in October I took on an allotment and am trying to get into the planting out at the right times and effects on soil due to temp etc etc etc.

I cannot wait until I can get my motorbike back out and blow the cobwebs off. I do miss a warm summers day and a no destination ride. Nothing can beat it!

Wifey is now telling me we have to sort out where and what we are doing for holidays this year so I will let you know what I have been told im doing shortly! :) (thats going to earn me a slap lol)

Signing off for now......

Monday 12 January 2009

Monday 12th January...

Well its been a while and being typically british lets get the weather out of the way.....Instead of now being too cold to do anything it has today been too bloody wet to do anything :) Still at least the view out of our little prisons this time of year has now changed!

The last week has at least brought in some work and you have got to love those elderly people.
I have for the best part of the week been decorating a lovely old couples living room and bedroom. These folks were well past there mid seventies, the size of umpalumpas and histericly funny. Honestly I have never met a couple of people who bounce off of each other like these two. Married for over 50 years they are biccering one minute and then laughing the next but what I cant express to you enough is the fact that this is non stop :) They are at it constantly and when their attention was not on each other it was turned upon me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard, several times, about the fiasco of the husband dropping the wife off at Morrisons only to drive off with her handbag andher arduous journey of tracking him down to reclaim it and then giving him hell. I am sure he will be getting hell for many days to come for this travisty! Still it brought a smile to my face the first 3 times I heard it, and the following 12 times I heard it after that as I thought it would be rude to show I was sick of hearing the whine about it!

The weekend brought my younger brother over for the night for a "bit of a drink"

Now this "bit of a drink" seemed like a good idea but i must point out now that I do not drink much alcohol anymore but after the 3rd glass of red wine I had convinced myself I was young again and it wouldnt hurt to have some more...and of course it didnt hurt at all that evening whilst drinking it, in fact it felt great and the evening was superb with some real time catching up with my brother without all of our respective offspring or wives in tow. We really put the world to rights and covered many obscure topics of conversation many of which now seem to elude me as, of course, I am now sober again.

The hangover was nothing short of spectacular! Never and I really do mean Never have I felt so bad after drinking. I was convinced at six in the morning that I was suffering the start of a catastrophic stroke. Now I used to be a bit of a boozer, thats a bit of an understatement I was a real heavy boozer (not in the sense of an alcoholic but far too much to do me any good) and your body builds up a resistance towards the day after which of course now my body just doesnt have. In fact my body now shys away from excesses of alcohol which is probably a good thing as I dont drink very much at all as a rule. This hangover is now into its second day and even though its nothing like I felt yesterday my body is still protesting very loadly so me thinks its time to have a break from drink for quite some time as I have never experienced a two day hangover!

As I felt like half a human today I got out to the local B&Q and picked up my seed potatoes for the allotment. Bargain as well so I got two packs of early spuds and two packs of main spuds. All I need to do now is hold my impatience so I dont plant them too early.

These contact lenses are the best things I have ever tried and after the check up today they have settled in well so I will be keeping them! They are so much easier than glasses especially when working and I wish I had tried them sooner!

Time to sign off for now so i will right some more soon :)

A spoilt day...

When I say spoilt I do mean in a good way :)

The weather is still freezing without any sign of a let up for at least a week abd the kids came running in excitedly shouting its snowing! Now you have to love a kids idea of "snowing" It was a few odd flakes but of course they had visions of winter scenes within minutes that they could build snowmen and go sledging an ice skating, you've got to love a kids vision.

Of course it snowed for about 3 minutes leaving them disapointed until the next distraction ame along...that took about 12 seconds!

Wifey had here first day off in a while and has enjoyed it with her usual lay in and I cant blame her, shes never been a morning person and the chore of early shifts really takes it out of her.

We had a good chat about where our lives are leading and I hate it when the fairer sex have excellent intuition and read your mind.

We have, to date, tried living in southern Spain 3 times and I would love to to try again but in Northern Spain. There is a time limit on this in the aspect of we wouldnt go until our older girls have finished secondary school so that would be at least another 5 years. My problem usually, I have to admit because if I cannot be true to myself when writing when would I be, is that I would be counting down the years instead of living my life now.
Thoughts of why I want to move again over there are straight forward. The lure of the culture and the Spanish is so strong and at a gut level that I can't explain it. But even though we have learnt alot about Spain over the last 7 years we have yet to make a move there last.

Is the grass greener? Isnt it always? But as I have said thats not the reason, its a primal urge for want of a better description. Anyway I digress, our conversation was about living life now after all I may not be here in 5 years so we are going to really explore Britain. I would love to live next to the coast but lets face it theres alot of it so some serious riding is going to be lined up for this year and probably next year to have a really good look around. There is much our little isle has to offer its just a case of finding it and, in my case, making the effort to do so.

So in short I should be in 5 years time at a serious indecision as to wether I want to move to another country and leave behind what I have here.

Now onto being spoilt. I am at heart a great big kid and today I got an unexpected small tax return (now that in itself is a grand stroke of luck!) so I got dragged kicking and screaming, honestly :), to town and into a Game store where I was forced to purchase a new Xbox 360. This apparently is the start on my new outlook on life of living in the now! Of course you can imagine wifey looking at me with a determined look on her face and hand on hips when this is said. So I have spent a happy few hours just blowing away the baddies, its quite a stress relief you know but of course we come full circle back to the kids.

Now I have been told I need the following:

A memory card
Wifi for online gaming
Get this... a headset and microphone so I can talk to other gamers!! Oh I had to cry on that one.

So its been a good day. Heads sorted a bit and a new toy to boot. Lets see what the next day brings.

Here are the Pics

Isnt it fun learning how to do new things!! Two posts in I have managed to upload the photos!!

Now what were the kids saying about being an old git!

Bloody cold

Heres a few pics of the last lot of snow that we had here. As they are saying we are in for even more snow this coming week it makes me glad the heating works!
See how good I am I wanted to put the following in but completely forgot!! Stiil I think the following is a great set of rules to live the next year by...

1.. Throw out non-essential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.

2. Keep only cheerful friends . The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer , crafts, gardening , whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud . Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire lives, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music , plants, hobbies , whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it . If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9 Don't take guilt trips . Take a trip to the shops, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10.Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away .

A new start.

Now seems an appropriate time to begin. The start of a new year all fresh and waiting before us like fields of freshly fallen snow.

My kids tell me I am getting old at the grand age of 35! but I feel as if I am just starting out, the tribe is getting older and not so time demanding as they once were. There seems to be more time for myself and my wife with breaks away by ourselves. You know the type its those few precious days where you feel like you are adults and most importantly you are yourselves again instead of just being Mum & Dad.

Now I am not going to go into a long winded description of who I am or what I do here, I think it will be better for that to come out as I write over the next few months. If no one but me reads this then it shouldnt be a problem :)

I have had no new year resolutions aside from deciding now to start up this blog.

My plans for the future are straight forward enough... stay afloat and try to keep happy. Its too early to plant anything out to grow and work is very quiet so lots of time for cabin fever to grow.

Does anyone wear contact lenses? I have just started with them and am struggling to get used to them as it feels bloody foreign having something in your eyes. Still as an old git (kids words) I should be wearing them so I look younger! So who am I to let them down? Just a worse sense of sight than I had before..overated im told compared to looking good.LOL

Right then that will do for today as the dog wants to be walked and the dinner to be cooked or Wifey will be most displeased when she gets home from work!

I will also try to figure out what else this blog thing does so I will be back soon...maybe!
